Media Release: Leading Political Voices Back Long-Term Investment in Australia’s International Development Partnerships
With the 3 May federal election fast approaching, a new podcast series has brought international development into the national spotlight, showing growing political interest in strengthening Australia’s partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
The International Development Contractors Community (IDCC), in collaboration with the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the Safer World for All campaign, and the ANU Development Policy Centre, supported the Devpolicy Talks podcast episode to hear directly from political leaders on the future of development.
The series featured in-depth contributions from Minister for International Development and the Pacific Pat Conroy, Greens Deputy Leader Senator Mehreen Faruqi, and Independent MP Zali Steggall. Each offered strong support for a development program that delivers long-term value to Australia and its regional partners.
The Coalition was invited to participate and respectfully declined. IDCC looks forward to reviewing their international development policy when released and anticipates a positive contribution to this important national discussion.
“What we heard in these podcasts reflects what we hear from communities and programs across the region, Australia’s international development program is essential to our national interest, and deserves multi-partisan support,” said Nathan Hansford, CEO of IDCC.
“Contractors and consultants deliver some of Australia’s most impactful work across the Indo-Pacific, from health systems and infrastructure to education and climate adaptation. We encourage the next government to provide clear, consistent policy direction and practical support so that these partnerships can continue to deliver meaningful results.”
IDCC welcomed Minister Conroy’s commitment to increased development funding and a renewed focus on local leadership. We also welcomed Senator Faruqi’s call for stronger oversight and accountability mechanisms, and Independent MP Zali Steggall’s emphasis on climate resilience as a critical regional security issue.
“It’s encouraging to see clear commitment across parties to meaningful development outcomes,” Hansford said. “Whoever forms government, we want to see a continued focus on transparency, local partnerships, and policy settings that enable long-term impact.”
IDCC commends all contributors to the Devpolicy Talks episode and looks forward to working with the next Parliament to strengthen Australia’s role as a respected, reliable development partner in the region.
